I remember submerging slowly into the deep water of a swimming school pool. It was my first lesson. I was around three years old. Uninterested in learning to swim but delighted by the silence and softness of the water surrounding my tiny body, I just let the world around me disappear. It was the first time in so long that I felt at peace. My teacher took me out of the water, telling my mother I had no survival instinct. How little he knew about what my soul needed.
